One might ask why we are traveling to Mississippi to build houses in the middle of July when it is a constant 95 degrees during the day, relief of only about 78 degrees each night, thunderstorms happen often, and oh yeah, we have to pull a chain in the shower to keep the water running (no complaining). Well, to answer that.. SERVICE! We are a group of thirteen soon-to-be seniors in high school and two teachers from Scranton Prep School in Scranton, PA. Our school has service requirements, consistent with the Jesuit ideals and values, for students each year throughout their high school experience which culminates in a service trip (for most students) the summer between their junior and senior years. We are just one of 16 service trips this summer. Teachers volunteer their time to chaperone these amazing trips.
We are excited to be staying at Lagniappe http://www.lagniappechurch.com/ , and be working with Habitat for Humanity Bay-Waveland http://www.habitatbaywaveland.org/ . The work that we plan to do and what we intend to accomplish on this trip far outweigh any worries about heat or the tight bunkhouses where we will be staying. We have been fortunate in our lives and are looking forward to helping to build houses for those who have lost their homes in the tragic event of Hurrican Katrina. Even though it happened four years ago, the coast still needs help. And we are more than happy to volunteer our time for others.
We will be posting updates here as we progress through the week so be sure to check back often and see what's going on! Also, please leave us any comments you have, we would love to read them!

ReplyDeleteDear Abigail,
ReplyDeleteTimmy is home from the hospital and he's doing great! It feels strange not to be running to the Mercy all of the time. You seem to be so busy and I'm sure that you're having fun. You'll have to make plans to go the Harry Potter movie with everyone when you get back!
Jeanne

Dear Cara,
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to hearing stories about your trip when you return to Scranton. Now that you're so handy, I have some work for you to do around my house.
Love you and Miss you,
Grandma
Hey Cara!!
ReplyDeleteI took Matthew to LA twister the other day and he peeked through the window (and made that hole in the screen a little bigger, sorry) and yelled "Cara"!!! I think he thinks its your apartment or something. Some blonde chick was there and wasnt nearly as generous with the portions!
The Big Six miss their leader! They fear you are "not into the lake as much" so you must come back full force! A long night time boat ride is in high demand. (It's apparently completely lame with me as the captain-- am I that uncool? - dont answer that)
I'm proud that you are doing what you are doing this week. I was pathetic in hs and did nothing....
What a great experience for you! Next year it's off to Europe!
See you soon,
Lori
By the way, did you hear that Andrew got engaged?!
Dearest Cara, (one of my favorite nieces),
ReplyDeleteYour mom and I are planning a cruise to Canada unless you can come up with a better idea.
See you soon. Proud of all your hard work. Hammer a nail for your Aunt Gigi.
Love,
Gigi
Hey Cara!
ReplyDeleteHope you're having fun in Mississippi! Nana has been missing you so much she called me Cara 3 times this week.
Love,
Mia
